Description

STS Grade 3+

This is a sweet little cottage in a peaceful wooded valley above the traditional village of Maentwrog. The cottage has been attractively prepared with a warm and welcoming lounge which has a large inglenook fireplace housing a log fire. It is one of two attached cottages situated up a short well maintained drive 500m from the village centre. Attractive valley views can be appreciated from the gardens of the cottage especially in the upper rear garden where there are some garden furniture. Maentwrog village is situated on the edge of the river Dwyryd and has a mythological past; it's mentioned in the 'Mabinogion' (a book filled with traditional Welsh stories). You can judge for yourself whether the stories are true but the stone (in Welsh, 'Maen') thrown by the giant 'Twrog' can be seen in the village church grounds. There is a homely village inn and is within walking distance (15 min) and the Ffestiniog steam train station of Tan y Bwlch. Porthmadog town is only 9 miles for shops, leisure centre, beaches etc. Harlech (9 miles) for an impressive castle, antique shops and amazing views of Snowdonia. It's also only a 10 minute drive from Zip World: Titan ride and Bounce Below in Ffestiniog and Antur Stiniog's downhill mountain bike trails. The cottage is also just 15 minutes from the mountain bike centre in Coed y Brenin.

Guest Feedback:
CW (August 2023): 4.2 STARS
"Ideal location for exploring the Porthmadog area. The cottage is well situated to explore the Porthmadog area, with very friendly neighbours, It had everything we needed. The smoke alarm in the hall is a bit sensitive, it went off when making toast (not burnt) and when we left the oven door open to cool down" Thanks for the Review - which are always forwarded to the Property Owner. New Mandatory Fire Guidance has been issued, which could result in lots of modificiations to holiday homes in the UK. We suspect that a Heat Alarm could be more appropriate in the kitchen - but all will be dependent on an updated Fire Risk Assessment.
WR (June 2023): 4.7 STARS "Woodland Retreat. Once again we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay at Woodland Cottage. The weather was perfect: warm days with cloudless skies and the woods were filled with birdsong. We were pleased to meet Eirian once more and would like to stay there again this year but think that the price is now too high"

DS (May 2022): 4.2 STARS "We were disappointed and annoyed to on our arrival no toilet paper, washing up liquid or dish cloth was provided. On contacting the owner we were told that this was due to covid regulations and we should have been informed by you. No mention of this said when I inquired about the key and asked about the provision of towels etc.. Over the past 2 years we have stayed in at least 6 self catering cottages and never experienced this problem, towel have also being provided .In all the previous properties all brochures an local information had been removed because of covid but not in this case." There should have been toilet paper provided - sorry about this. Toilet paper will be provided in the future - at least one roll per toilet.

This is typical of traditional Welsh cottages in the area, retaining much of its character whilst having been sensitively modernised. The accommodation is as shown and described in the STS website. (The garden and rotary washing line were not available to us during our stay for safety reasons.) The quiet location and friendly but not intrusive neighbour were much appreciated. There are lovely destinations for all tastes and abilities within easy reach of the cottage and we ran out of time in our two weeks before we ran out of things to do. We were very lucky with the weather. Don't miss the pretty little church through a lych gate in the village. It really is a gem.
