The first time ever I have been on holiday on my own - dogs notwithstanding - and I choose the middle of nowhere at 800ft o.d.! However, I couldn't have picked a better location; the solitude, the scenery, the vast open sky (depositing it's contents on our hapless heads!) complimented the snug and cosy accomodation perfectly. Whilst scarcely requiring the skills of Ray Mears or Bear Grylls, it was reassuring to recall how to light a real fire - and how to keep a real fire going (every young boys dream, a bonfire you could poke with a stick, indoors!) - how to cook with a 'new' form of cooker, how to manage without the TV (easy! wood fired TV far more entertaining!) and for a spell, reliving how our ancestors did - electricity, if any, at a premium, human involvement little and fleeting, and the companionship of your hounds a valuable aid. A lot of off-road walking was enjoyed, and the peace and tranquility of ones own company will stay with me for a long time. Beautiful location, an excellent restoration of a derelict property (Ordnance Survey ref. not mine!) and a comforting mix of olde world charm assisted by modern-day technology. Perhaps, not for those who insist on all mod-cons and 24/7 internet availability, happily I don't miss them at all. An excellent "sorbet" to cleanse the soul of the rigours of modern living. Thank you Ty-Gatws.
Stunning remote small cottage.
It's a wonderful place, just close enough to Tremadog and Portmadog for shops and civilisation for essentials and to feel slightly secure, but really it feels in the middle of nowhere! Surrounded by meadows and marsh, views of distant mountains, it's beautiful. We enjoyed roaming sheep and regular visits from cows, owls, bats, birds and bugs of all kinds.
The ratings for cleanliness, comfort etc are relative, as you have to accept the absence of some comforts. It's just-about off grid (except for mains cold water and super fast internet). All hot water goes through the impressive stove, and there's some satisfying learning to do to get the hang of cooking and heating reliably.
Overall the place is bigger than it looks in the photos, there's even a little attic for a few more to sleep. Although that might challenge the stove and hot water situation. But for me (6'4'' ) the mattress and bed were a touch small, that was the only thing.
The STS staff were very helpful, we had a query late on a Sunday and they picked up the phone and helped immediately.
Overall a wonderful place.
Love it. Not for everyone. Views. Remoteness. Peace. Super comfortable. Bed and sheets were great. Hot tub was a win.
Customer service was great
I have been waiting for the deposit for the key for 20 days. I called and they assured me that they would check and the system did not work, but I think they are incorrect.
Ty Gatws is a wonderfully remote and relaxing cottage. Perfect for anyone who wants to get away from it all.
Good points: location, rustic, quiet, well resourced, traditional finish, hot tub.
Bad points: cleanliness (a swarm of flies flew out when we first open the door, there were lots of cobwebs around, and several pieces of crockery were dirty), hot water (it took a long time for the water to heat up, and even then it wasn't very warm), the fridge wasn't working.
Despite all that, we would still go back as it was a lovely place.
