Description

STS Grade 4
Please note: Due to changes in fire regulations the multi-fuel stove is currently not available for use.

This charming 17th-century cottage is a rustic and romantic getaway. It is located in a picturesque setting on the edge of a lake, surrounded by ancient oak woodlands. The cottage has been beautifully restored and retains much of its original character, including thick stone walls, a huge inglenook fireplace, and the stone staircase. The bedrooms are separated by original elm wooden post-and-panel partitions. On clear nights, guests can stargaze, as Snowdonia is an official ‘dark sky’ area. There is also a rowing boat available for guests to use on the lake, but please note that only experienced oarsmen should venture out onto the water.

There are two local pubs within walking distance of the cottage, The Oakley Arms and The Grapes. The surrounding area offers a variety of activities, including mountain biking, hill walking, fishing, and visiting the nearby slate mines and castle. The cottage is located a short walk from Tanybwlch Station on the Ffestiniog Steam Railway. This scenic railway winds its way through Snowdonia, offering stunning views of the mountains and valleys. There are several nearby beaches, including Harlech beach, 11 miles away.

"
Quite cold. Would have been really great to be able use the fire place as we found the downstairs quite cold. The water was also turned off when we arrived and we couldn't find it in the instructions. We did look around and luckily found the outdoor tap to turn it on. If we could have used the fire place or the house would have been warmer our whole stay would have been much more cosier and nicer." Thanks for the Review. Sorry that the fireplace is not currently available (and advertised as such). This is as a result of new statutory Fire Guidance that came into force last summer, and a subsequent revised fire risk assessment. Additional statutory Fire Guidance is expected imminently - this will help the Property Owner to determine if the fireplace can be made available to guests. Sorry about this.
MN (Nov 2023): Excellent "We loved our stay here. It’s a great base from which to start your exploration of the ridiculously beautiful surrounding nature. The direct area is not as touristic as some other parts of Snowdonia, making it a real gem. The house was perfect, very clean, comfortable and cosy. We felt as if we were in a Christmas film."
LB (Oct 2023): Excellent "This was a brilliant cosy cottage! I stayed with 3 other friends and we all loved it. There’s no TV but if anything that was better as it encouraged us to play board games and socialise! The location is beautiful! It’s right on the lake and surrounded by gorgeous trees. We had a car which most probably will in Snowdonia as it’s not that well connected but by car it’s easy about 25 mins to the Watkin Path car park, close to Beddgelert and 12 mins from Porthmadog where there’s a big Tesco. I would definitely come back here again!"
E.B (Sep 2023): Excellent "The most perfect stay for walks and enjoying nature. We had everything we needed and more. Beautiful, comfortable and well located"
J.S. (Sep 2023): Excellent "This cottage was everything we could ask for and more. As soon as we arrived it felt peaceful and cosy. The cottage it situated right beside the lake, which is only shared by another cottage and a picnic area on the far side so felt very private and relaxing. The cottage was extremely tidy, clean and well equipped with everything we could need. Only suggestion is to bring shampoo and soap since this is the only thing not provided. Such an amazing location, 10 min drive from the most amazing beaches, right in Snowdonia National Park with plenty of hiking. I wish we could stay longer"
F.L. (Aug 2023): Excellent "What a fabulous little cottage!! Everything from start to finish was spot on, check in & out was easy. So peaceful right by the lake, and even a trip out on the boat that comes with the cottage (just a shame that because of the weather, we didn’t get to use it more) We all slept so well the beds were comfy and clean, the cottage is old and quirky but it just added to the value of the relaxing get away!! It had everything we needed and more in the kitchen. Also the fact the cottage didn’t have a TV was great as it meant we spent a lot more family time together playing the board & card games that were at the cottage! I can’t recommend this little place enough and we can’t wait to be able to come back again as soon as possible!"
M.F.A. (Aug 2023):
Excellent "It was very nice place. Structure of building was very old and was very nice. There was also a boat for guests. That was really a very nice experience."

Stairs & Steps:

Due to the staircase this cottage is not suitable for less abled guests

Access to the Side Door: There are 3 steps up and then 4 down to reach the side door. Once you have open the side door there is 1 step down to reach the ground floor level of the cottage.

Access to the Front Door: There is 1 step up to the Front Door.

Ground Floor: The whole ground floor is on one same level.

Stone Staircase: To reach the 1st floor where all the bedrooms are located there is a stone staircase, due to this staircase this cottage is not suitable for less abled guests. There are 5 steps up and then a 90 degree turn, then 1 step up to another 90 degree turn to another 3 steps. Due to there age and use during the centuries the stone surface is now very polished, care needs to be taken walking up and down these stairs (especially when wearing socks). There is a hand rail on one side of this staircase.

1st Floor: The whole 1st floor is on one same level.
