STS Grade 3

Once inside this historic cottage, you cannot fail to be impressed by both the superb bird's eye views overlooking the harbour, Glaslyn valley & Snowdonia mountains and the cottage interior, which is most comfortably prepared in a contemporary style. The bay windows frame the mountain panorama and you will be hard pressed to leave it. It is only a short walk down 'Grisiau Mawr' (Big Stairs) to the harbour and on to Porthmadog for excellent shopping and eating, leisure centre, steam train rides and museums. The village of Borth y Gest is just half a mile walk away with its harbour side cafes and numerous sandy coves along the Welsh Coastal Path. The stunning sandy beaches at Black Rock Sands and Samson's Bay are 2 miles away, Snowdonia mountains are as close as 5 miles away, Beddgelert and Snowdon 7 miles and Criccieth and its castle 3 miles. Favourite attractions locally include Portmeirion village and gardens and the steam trains of the Ffestiniog Railway. Zip World and Bounce Below adrenaline rush adventures in Blaenau Ffestiniog, 15mls up the valley.

Guest Comments:
DC (April 2024): 5 STARS
"Garth cottage, we will definitely be back. Lovely cottage, in central location overlooking the beautiful harbour, highly recommend. Lovely property"
PF (April 2024): 5 STARS "We stayed at Garth Cottage during Easter 2024. Communication from the owner was excellent prior to our arrival with an excellent welcome pack sent on email. Thanks to the detailed directions we found the property without any problems. The cottage is well appointed with good sized rooms which are comfortable. The property over looks the harbour, with views of the steam railway beyond, together with the mountains.
There are many thoughtful touches such as good quality maps, well appointed drying room and barbeque on the terrace. Kitchen has all you could need (and more) for cooking on holiday. The cottage is well situated it is a few minutes walk to the centre of Porthmadog, There is plenty to do locally such as Llama walking, trips on the steam railways, beaches (such as Borthy Guest), and plenty of opportunities for nice walks. All in all an excellent stay we will be back!"

SA (New Years Eve 2024): Excellent "Wonderful cottage that makes you feel at home. Beautiful view over the harbour of Porthmadog."
GPR (October 2023): 4.5 STARS "Booked at the last minute, we were delighted to find a cottage so central . STS are a very helpful and reliable company to use and I would recommend them ten times over. The cottage itself was comfortable with a STUNNING view over the harbour and mountains which we enjoyed from the balcony a few times, despite the time of year. Parking can be a problem! We arrived and were unable to stop outside to unload our luggage. I'm guessing it must be a lot harder during the season. Such a pity as this is a beautiful location"
SB (August 2023): Excellent "Stunning property, wonderful location. Garth Cottage is ideally positioned, just the right distance away from the hub bub of Porthmadog but within easy walking distance to shops, cafes, the beach and coastal and hill walks. The property is great for dogs, allowing them safe access to an open space. The beds and soft furnishings are comfortable, and there is an endless supply of hot water with a very good powerful shower. The kitchen is well equipped, with enough of everything you should need from a self catering holiday. The house is architecturally interesting and full of character"
KL (July 2023): Excellent "House was very homely. Kitchen was extremely well equipped with many extras included. The location was excellent, 5 minutes down steps to the harbour. We enjoyed the views especially from the lovely terrace that overlooked the harbour. It was private and peaceful with beautiful hydrangeas. We could see the steam trains from here. Lots of books and games, Welsh scrabble was interesting! A great place to walk from or visit all the surrounding beautiful surroundings."
JC (July 2023): 4.7 STARS "A stay at a most beautiful cottage in Porthmadog. Had a fabulous time in Garth Cottage this week. The location, layout and in particular the terrace over-looking the most amazing views couldn’t have been bettered. Also as the weather was changeable and staying in a cottage like this meant being stuck in doors was also fun, with views from the lounges making up for not being out. Catherine has provided everything one needs, including maps, advice, and all the cooking essentials (oils, tea, sugar etc). She always responded quickly and the check-in and -out very easy. Will be booking again"
DC (May 2023): 4.7 STARS "We have been to Garth Cottage a number of years and would definitely recommend. Lovely location and close walking distance to town"
MH (August 2022): 3.8 STARS "Great location. Garth cottage has a fabulous view of Porthmadog harbour, the front terrace is a perfect spot to watch the boats and crabbing. The accommodation met our needs well, beds were really comfy, shower was great and kitchen well equipped. Really quiet at night, no noise from the town even on a warm weekend night. Not so many places to eat in the evening in Porthmadog but we enjoyed meals at Y Banc for tapas and Good Mood for pizza. The real bonus is that you’re so close to many top days out. We managed a steam train trip to the gorgeous Beddgelert, Zip World at Blaenau, fabulous beach at Llandanwyg, Portmeirion, Black Rock Llamas (don’t miss this!), Borth y Gest beach and Llanbedrog beach."
LG 09 Jul 2022: 4.3 STARS "Cottage location perfect with local shops 5 mins away. Beautiful views from cottage, as description on website says though a little dusty, and could tell dogs had been on sofas, wifi not very strong. Cottage has everything you need otherwise equipped kitchen and spacious rooms has comfortable beds and nice secure garden, street parking was ok always got a space. Enjoyed sitting watching harbour of an evening. We've been to Porthmadog before so know the area, short walk to Borth Y Guest and Black Rock sands which is a lovely long beach. Best Fish n Chips from Chippy Dre in Tremadog and lovely Pizza and walk in Beddgelert. We had good weather for Wales so overall a good week"
NC 02 Jul 2022: 4.5 Stars "A welcoming holiday base with all the basics provided for you. Superb views from the front of the house across the town and harbour, to the mountains and valleys beyond.
A great place to enjoy the sunshine, as you watch the world go by with the famous narrow gauge trains coming and going in the distance."

DR (June 2022): 4.3 STARS " We very much enjoyed staying at Garth cottage: the house has a lot of character and superb views. It was wonderful to be able to see mountains, boats and steam trains from the house and garden. The cottage is only a short walk away from the harbour area and the town. Porth Madoc is an excellent base for exploring Snowdonia and the Llyn peninsular"
A C (April 2022:) This is a lovely old stone built Welsh cottage, with amazing views across to the mountains and The Cob, with the steam trains. Very comfortable and in a very quiet location. Only downside are the steep flight of steps from the road to the front door for the less fit!!!
(Could do with a potato peeler, despite having every other kitchen utensil, and a new microwave, as the present one is very temperamental.)

Mrs N (July 2019): Excellent "We loved the location and the views"

Visit Wales Comments (April 2019):
"Set in an elevated position Garth cottage enjoys wonderful views from the front over the town, harbour and countryside which belies the initial impression. The wealth of original features and welsh art all adds to the sense of the place."

There steps are 4 steps down from the gate to the path, 2 steps midway and then 7 steps down to the door. These last steps are steep. There is a handrail on the right hand side as you descend.

The lounge and kitchen diner are on the same floor, bedrooms and bathroom/wc on the 1st floor. Patio to the front is enclosed and level with some steps down to a side gate, garden to the back is enclosed, terraced and raised, not suitable for young children.

A warm and comfortable cottage in a very convenient position not only for Porthmadog but also for visiting Snowdonia and the Llŷn Peninsular. There are lovely seating areas outside for when the weather permits and the views from the front of the cottage are fantastic. There is an abundant supply of hot water and the kitchen is extremely well equipped. We have stayed here several times already and certainly intend to come back again.
